So, I started this whole thing because I saw those A-list celebs, like Kendall and Bella, rocking that Prada Re-Edition 2005 bag. You know the one, right? It’s everywhere! I fell for it hard, but the price tag? Ouch. So, I decided, why not try to make my own?
First, I spent hours, and I mean HOURS, online, just staring at pictures of the real deal. I wanted to get the shape and size just right. It’s based on one of their older designs, so it was a bit of a treasure hunt, but I found enough photos to get a good idea.
I learned that the original bags have a unique serial number on a tag inside. Of course, mine won’t have that, but it’s a cool detail. Also, figured out that there are a ton of fakes out there. It made me feel a bit better about trying to make one myself, to be honest.
Choosing the material was the next big step. I read that a lot of people like the Saffiano leather version, not the nylon one. So, that’s what I went with. It feels more substantial and, hopefully, will be more durable. I also picked up some chain for the shorter strap and a thicker strap material for the longer one. Part of the charm of this bag is that you can switch them out, right?
- Gathering all the pieces took some time.
- Then, carefully cut the leather according to the pattern I sketched out.
- Slowly and steadily, I stitched the pieces together, making sure everything lined up perfectly.
- Finally, I attached the hardware.
The actual sewing was, let me tell you, a challenge. I definitely pricked my fingers a few times! But, I took it slow, watched a bunch of YouTube videos on leatherworking, and eventually, it started to look like a bag!
Honestly, it’s not a perfect replica. There are a few little things that aren’t quite the same. I am sure that it is not same with the quality of a real Prada bag. But you know what? I made it! And I’m pretty darn proud of it. It’s got that same vibe, that same classic look. Plus, I saved a ton of money, which is always a good thing.
I think I did a pretty good job, all things considered. I might even try making another one in a different color sometime.
